The Tule Red Tidal Restoration Project stands as a model for innovative, large-scale tidal marsh restoration and regional conservation impact. As the first project to break ground to address the 2008 USFWS OCAP Biological Opinion, it delivered critical wetland and species habitat for imperiled fish, including Chinook Salmon and Delta Smelt. Starting in 2011, WES designed, planned, and developed this project under contract with the State and Federal Contractors Water Agency in coordination with the Department of Water Resources.
The project restored 420 acres of marsh habitat on the eastern edge of Grizzly Bay in the Suisun Marsh. The project created a self-sustaining tidal marsh habitat in a final design that maximized tidal exchange, accommodated sea-level rise, and enhanced the resilience of vegetated tidal wetlands. Today, the restored marsh supports food web productivity in Grizzly Bay and exemplifies WES’ leadership in delivering complex, ecologically meaningful restoration projects aligned with regional and agency conservation priorities
