The Piedra Azul property was selected for habitat conservation based on the overall ecological benefit for multiple threatened and endangered species, as well as the proximity to other conservation sites, including the proposed Arotzarena Ranch Preserve. Together, the two properties conserve approximately 5,000 acres of species habitat.
Surrounded by land unlikely to be developed or converted for crop production due to unfavorable terrain, the Piedra Azul Creek flows along the southern portion of the Bank site, and provides durable wetland habitat along with seasonal streams. Upland habitat fills out the rest of the site, vegetated by native annual grasses.
