Giant Garter Snake Mitigation

The proposed 271-acre Lurline Creek Conservation Bank, located in Colusa County, California, will provide habitat for the federally and state-threatened giant garter snake (GGS) (Thamnophis gigas). The project will build upon WES's success with our Sutter Basin Mitigation Bank and Colusa Basin Mitigation, both of which are sold out of GGS credits.

The Project will restore former rice fields and agricultural ditches into a mosaic of perennial marsh, seasonal wetlands, and upland refugia. These efforts support the recovery of the giant garter snake and benefit a range of native species, including tricolored blackbird, northwestern pond turtle, Swainson’s hawk, and more. The project is a key part of regional conservation strategies, helping to maintain biodiversity, improve water quality, and enhance climate resilience.
