Species and Wetland Mitigation

WES is working with state and federal agencies on the approval of the Hamilton Bend Mitigation Bank, which will provide floodplain and riparian restoration along the Sacramento River. The 226‑acre Bank in Colusa County, will provide compensatory mitigation habitat for impacts to Valley elderberry longhorn beetle, salmonids, and floodplain riparian habitat.

Riparian and floodplain habitats play an important ecological role for native species; they can also provide relief from high flood events. By reestablishing the natural function of the floodplain, the project will increase the landscape’s capacity to safely store and convey high flows during storm events. Restored floodplains slow and disperse floodwaters, reducing stress on downstream levees and other flood-control infrastructure. Together, these improvements will make the area more resilient to floods and create better connections for wildlife along the Sacramento River.
