Species Conservation

WES, under contract with Pacific Gas & Electric Co. (PG&E), has established the 632.61-acre Black Mountain Mitigation Site in San Bernardino County. The site provides high-quality habitat for Mohave desert tortoise (Gopherus agassizii) and Mohave ground squirrel (Xerospermophilus mohavensis), as well as Lake and Streambed Alteration Resources (LSA) for permitting under Fish and Game Code Section 1600. The desert landscape supports low-growing shrubs mixed with annual and perennial grasses, with numerous animal burrows scattered throughout providing critical habitat for the covered species.
