Stream and Wetland Mitigation

The Alabama River Mitigation Bank is a 971-acre site located within the Alabama River Basin in Monroe and Wilcox Counties, Alabama. Approved in 2013, this mitigation bank is strategically positioned in the Alluvial/Deltaic Plain physiographic region, supporting the restoration of wetland habitat and riparian areas to improve water quality throughout the basin.

WES led the restoration efforts, which included stream and bottomland hardwood restoration, and collaborated with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to reintroduce federally listed threatened mussel species such as the Orangenacre Mucket and the Ovate clubshell. The project aligns with Alabama’s Comprehensive Wildlife Conservation Strategy, ensuring long-term ecological benefits for the region.Mitigation credits generated by the bank are available for purchase, providing a reliable solution for developers and agencies seeking to offset unavoidable impacts to wetlands and streams within the service area.
